Journalistic tribute: Authentic delicious “Greek Breakfast” at the Skiathos Palace Hotel & Alkyon Hotel
The Sporades Group of the Derveni’s family is well aware of the special importance of local gastronomy in creating unforgettable memories for its guests, and one of the most powerful means it employs is the “Greek Breakfast”*, a recognizable brand that upgrades the Greek tourist product. In fact, in 2013 the Skiathos Palace hotel was among the first 100 in all of Greece and the first in Skiathos to be awarded for its inclusion in the “Greek Breakfast” program.
The comfort, cosmopolitanism and charm of the long course of the luxurious Skiathos Palace combined with the unique view of the beautiful Koukounaries beach is the trade mark of the most historic hotel on the island. In a more casual style, the Alkyon Hotel on new port o f Skiathos, a breather from the hot action of the center of the island, offers stunning azure views from the second floor terrace where breakfast is served.
The purpose of the Sporades Group is to introduce visitors to the culinary heritage of the place. To create a wide range of dishes, it uses as many authentic local products as possible, supporting local producers and generally honoring Greek quality products from all over Greece.
The Derveni’s family has a long tradition of collaborations with local producers spanning decades now, and shows its appreciation for authentic products and the people who produce them. From the Tsagaris family and their model livestock farm “Greek Family Farm” in Maganitsa Platanou, Almyros Volos is supplied with a wonderful feta cheese and other dairy products, while from the olive mill of the Antoniou family in Glossa Skopelos which is currently in the hands of the third generation , supplies extra virgin olive oil with a distinctive fruity taste.
It is not only the collaborations with local producers that give a unique character to the “Greek Breakfast” of the hotels of the Sporades Group. It is also his own farm that he has created on privately owned land in the area of Agia Eleni Skiathos with organic horticultural crops and vegetables to supply the restaurants in his hotels.
The organic tomatoes, for example, for the “Greek Breakfast” stir-fry come from this farm, and the caseri cheese that one might choose to accompany it is from Skopelos. Anchialos yogurt keeps company with the pure thyme honey of Alonissos, the jams and the wonderful spoon sweets from the company “Makedoniki” based in Skydra, Edessa, a trademark of the Greek confectionery tradition.
The brigade of hotel chefs has taken the topic of sweets and bread very seriously. In the confectionery department, they make daily handmade apple pie with Zagora apples, bagatsa with milk from Aghialos, ravani, baklava, orange pie, chocolate pie, kadaifi, ekmek politiko, but also all the breads (with which the delicious egg fritters are prepared…).
Perhaps the numbers, which may be trivial but leave no doubt, show the special importance that the Sporades Group gives to the “Greek Breakfast” it offers in its hotels: it includes a total of 120 different products of which 85 products are served daily in the buffets while in one more than 70% come from Greek companies.
The Greekness of the flavors of the “Greek Breakfast” and the irresistible charm of the Skiathos Palace and Alkyon hotels add their own special weight to the tourist myth of the island.
