Mr. Kostas, at 93 years old, is a living testament to the traditions of Skopelos. He began working with the herd of goats following in his father’s footsteps when he was just 15, and since then, his life has been closely tied to nature and the animals of the island. His daily routine is filled with simple, traditional practices. He wakes up early in the morning to care for his goats, lead them to the pastures, and ensure they have food and water. His relationship with the animals is close and trusting, having spent over seven decades with them.
Mr. Kostas recalls a time when life on the island was much simpler, before tourism and modern changes. For him, herding was not just a profession but a way of life.
He continues to live with modesty and self-sufficiency, appreciating the small joys of nature, such as the calmness of the landscape and the fresh air of Skopelos. Despite his age, he has never abandoned his beloved occupation, maintaining the agility and energy that define him.
His wisdom and experience have made him a valuable member of the local community, and the younger generation of the island often seeks his advice on the secrets of livestock farming and traditional life. Mr. Kostas remains a living example of resilience and love for the land and nature.
